Everything you need to know before visiting Lalibela

Tips for Travelers

Lalibela is known as the "8th wonder of the world" for its remarkable rock-hewn churches, wonderful food, and famously warm locals. Our travel tips will help you know what to expect in advance so you can make the most of your stay in both Lalibela and Panoramic View Hotel.

  • Panoramic View Hotel is located just 23 km from Lalibela Airport — a scenic 25-minute drive through the Lasta Mountains and up to the highland village of Lalibela
  • The hotel is only a 10-minute walk from the rock-hewn church clusters, making it the ideal base for your visit
  • Free airport transfers are included — our team will meet you at the airport on arrival

Lalibela's rock-hewn churches are open for visitors from 6:00 am to 12:00 pm, and again from 2:00 pm to 5:00 pm. Visitors must purchase a $50 USD 4-day pass — once-in-a-lifetime value for these extraordinary UNESCO World Heritage structures.

Beyond the main cluster in town, our staff can help arrange visits to:

  • Yemrehanne Kristos — a mysterious Aksumite-style church built into a giant cave, with a subterranean lake said to have healing properties.
  • Ashetenmariam Monastery — perched on scenic Mt. Asheton above Lalibela, accessible by foot or mule, with breathtaking highland views. A half-day excursion.
  • Na'akute La'ab Church — a charming semi-cave church conveniently located on the road between town and the airport, built in the early 13th century.
Tip: Visit the main churches early morning (6:00–8:00 am) before tour groups arrive for a more peaceful, atmospheric experience.

For most of Ethiopia, the rainy season runs from the end of June to early September. The area around Lalibela tends to be drier, though some rain can be expected daily during this period. Lalibela is generally a good year-round destination.

Daytime temperatures reach around 24°C; nights can drop to around 15°C. The 2,600-metre altitude keeps things pleasant — but bring a light jacket for evening strolls.

November to February is the best time to visit: dry, warm weather and many major religious celebrations. If you plan to visit around Ethiopian Christmas (January 7th) or throughout January, book hotels and flights well in advance as this is a very popular period.

Packing tip: Pack layers — mornings and evenings can be cool at this altitude even in dry season.

Ethiopia is a conservative country. Please respect local customs by dressing modestly:

  • Men: Shorts are acceptable, but should not be too short. Long trousers are preferred inside church compounds.
  • Women: Shoulders and knees should be covered at all times in public and especially in churches.
  • Shoes: Wear shoes that are easy to slip on and off — you must remove them before entering every church.
  • Headscarves: Women should bring a headscarf or shawl for church compounds.
Pro tip: Keep a lightweight scarf in your daypack — it doubles as a sun protector and can be used as a church head covering.

Ethiopia follows its own calendar — these are key dates and events to be aware of:

Sep 17
